Paul Tamanian has forged a robust visual vocabulary, resulting in a two-man show with Jim Dine and a cover article in American Style magazine. From larger than life sculptural forms to small, intimate 3-dimensional works, to eye-popping wall pieces, the breadth of Tamanian's work is unique in the art world, and is being recognized as such across the U.S.A. and abroad.

There are two elements that power Tamanian's work: his relentless experiments with form and his scorched-earth surface treatments. Paul Tamanian is seeking to create a new language of metal and paint. At times he makes aluminum look as delicate and as fragile as glass; at other times his work exudes the roughness of clay or hewn stone.

Born in New York, Tamanian grew up in Florida, receiving his degree from Florida State University. He discovered an affinity for clay by attending a pottery class at a local community center. He moved rapidly from basic skills to technical innovation, and then from clay on to aluminum. He has gone on to exhibit across the United States and has been invited to show his works in the company of some of America's foremost craftsmen and artists, including William Morris, Jun Kaneko, and Richard Jolley.

He works primarily in enamel paint on pre-primed aluminum — raw materials that are extremely expensive.“I spend between $3,000 and $8,000 a month in materials alone,” says Tamanian. “Sometimes I use $800 worth of metal for one painting. And people don’t realize that it can take dozens of experimental works to end up withone little area that I’m happy with.” Even after years as a professional artist, Tamanian is still always trying new things. He believes in what he calls the “what if?” factor, and is always willing to risk ruining a piece in order to try a new technique.“I like edgier stuff,” he says. “I might have to do 50 paintings to learn how to make a new method work..."

Tamanian's work has been commissioned and acquired by noted private collectors and corporations, ranging from film stars such as Halle Berry and Barry Bostwick, and playwright Neil Simon, to Delta Airlines and DataMaxx Corp.
