Variations on a Theme, the August exhibition at Thomas Deans Fine Art, presents the work of two very different artistic personalities: Atlantan Judie Jacobs and Ukrainian Sergey Putikovskiy. Both artists treat the theme of solitude in highly personal ways.

Sergey Putikovskiy's oils are inspired by the fields, lakes, and hills of his native Ukraine, often rendered in broad blocks of saturated color. Within each painting, a small cottage or a barn, usually nestled among trees, provides the focal point—and a sense of stability in ever-changing nature.

Jacobs works in mixed media. For her latest body of work, Solitude (2008), she explores the intersection of photography and painting, employing digitally altered photographic images, paint, and, finally, beeswax, to create a subtly glowing surface. Her images combine highly graphic elements with pure abstraction.

Coming from a background in business and education, Judie Jacobs commenced formal study in the arts in the early 1980's, focusing on ceramics. While she still creates large-scale ceramic wall installations, in recent years she has turned more and more to painting, most recently working in encaustic, sometimes incorporating photography. Her inspiration is wide ranging, from the Georgia and Tennessee mountains to Tuscan hill towns. Jacobs has been an art educator for the last 25 years and currently teaches visual arts at Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta.

SERGEY PUTIKOVSKIY was born into a family of artists in Kiev Ukraine. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kiev with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts. In 1995 he was elected to membership in the All-Ukrainian Artists Union. Putikovskiy has exhibited extensively, particularly in Europe, and his work can be seen in numerous collections in Europe and the United States. This marks his first exhibition in Atlanta.
