Sir Edwin Landseer, R.A. 1802-1873
The London-born sporting, animal, and portrait painter and sculptor Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) was perhaps the most famous personality of the Victorian art world. A prodigy who entered the Royal Academy Schools at fourteen Landseer helped establish the vogue for pictures of animals in picturesque settings participating in highly charged dramatic narratives--all rendered in bravura painterly technique. His success was phenomenal. He was elected a Royal Academician by the age of twenty-eight and moved easily in the highest circles of society. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were great admirers and patrons, and the Queen knighted the artist in 1850.
