Chris Metze
Artist's Statement: My paintings are inspired by the landscape. I strive to bring into balance the common abstract nature that allows all things to relate to each other, on a stage that is removed from specific meanings. The process of creating these works involves building a complex series of marks and then eliminating what is not important. I work toward a state of clarification. At the same time, I am always searching for a new language to facilitate the viewer to enter the painting and to come away with a new awareness. As much as these paintings are about experience, they are about color and, most importantly, painting. Through many overlapping layers, the building of planes creates a sense of time. Born in 1973, Chris Metze grew up in both Montreal, Quebec and Brooklyn, New York. He studied painting and sculpture at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, British columbia. Metze lives and paints in Woodstock, New York.
