From a prominent artistic family, Frank Dicksee studied at the Royal Academy Schools and began his career as an illustrator. He rose to prominence as one of the most fashionable of London portraitists. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1891 and president of the Academy in 1924. He was knighted the following year.
