John White Abbott 1763-1851
Although his vocation was a surgeon in his hometown of Exeter, he was recognized as a talented artist, though technically an amateur. Fifty years ago M. H. Grant wrote of Abbott: "A painter of great and only recently recognized merit in the mixed styles of Gainsborough and Wheatley. His oeuvre included finely sensitive drawings and richly colored landscapes with figures of elegant draughtsmanship. These he kept himself, or gifted to a few friends, so that his talent was long concealed."
