Edge Betty
contemporary

Betty Edge is an Atlanta photographer who works in both color and black and white, creating intensely observed still lifes that spring from a lifelong passion for flowers. Her work is a contemporary expression of an age-old tradition in Western art, using flowers as allusion and metaphor. With the help of a macro lens, Edge avoids mere description, seeking instead the underlying architecture and revealing the mystery and the poignant transience of beauty in the details of a single stem or blossom.

Betty Edge’s recent body of photographically based work involves traditional 35mm color photography that is digitized and printed on aluminum. In addition, Edge is now working in digital photography. Her imagery includes both the still lifes for which she is well known and quasi-abstract landscapes, which are notable for their atmospheric effects. The visual effect of this new approach is to underscore the fragility and ephemeral nature of her subject matter, as the surfaces reflect the shifting light in the surrounding environment.
