Eleanor Hughes
1882-1959

Much of Eleanor Hughes' work is in watercolor and depicts the countryside of Devon and Cornwall, which she loved. A sensitive draughtswoman, she had a delicate feeling for natural things such as stone walls, streams, and waterfalls.

Eleanor Waymouth Hughes was born in Christchurch, New Zealand to a family of English West-Country origin. She came to London to study art, and in 1907 she went to Newlyn in Cornwall to study under Stanhope Forbes. There she met and married Robert Hughes, a fellow pupil; they spent the rest of their lives in Cornwall.
