Jason Craighead
"My current work is an ongoing evolution. My process is intuitive, emotionally driven mark-making--sensing, feeling, responding to the life that appears, disappears and re-appears in the creation of a work. To me it's the poetry of passion, the belief in the heart." --Jason Craighead
North Carolina artist Jason Craighead's exhibition In the Heart of the Butterfly is a voyage of self-discovery and revelation. Encompassing works ranging from small paper pieces to very large canvases, the exhibition is filled with the artist's powerful visual visualization of emotion.
As one reviewer has described his latest paintings, "Craighead is intimately in tune with his emotions and what making art means to him. That self-awareness is reflected in [work] that brings elements of graffiti, process and place into every work." (New Raleigh)
Craighead's paintings often begin on the studio floor. As the artist walks over them-and sometimes spills on them-in his daily activities, ideas begin to emerge. The canvases then earn a spot on the wall, where the Craighead's emotional energy and technical aplomb are channeled into finishing what began as nothing more than a floor cloth. In the artist's own words, when he has finished a painting, "it has been stepped on, walked on, dripped on, scribbled on and coated, and it's just great."
