William Hoare of Bath 1707-1792
William Hoare was a portrait painter in oils and pastels, a contemporary of Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, and, like them, a founding member of the Royal Academy. He was also a considerable classical scholar. Until the exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, England, in 1990, Hoare had remained a much-neglected artist. The exhibition re-established his reputation as the most gifted English pastelist of his generation.
