Anton Goossens 1903-1980
Anton “Tony” Goossens [1903-1980] was a fixture in the eccentric Antwerp art scene of the 1950s and 60s. His highly stylized work was championed by the young Belgian avant-garde, who included it in their own sensational, provocative exhibitions in the late 1950s. From small "three-minute drawings” to large paintings on industrial insulation paneling, the works reflect Goossen's fascination with the human face and form as archetypal modernist image.
