[De Wint] qualifies as a painter's painter; and it comes as no surprise that he should have been appreciated by Constable, who Mrs. De Wint records was a customer. De Wint himself is quoted by his wife as often saying, "I do so love painting. I am never so happy as when looking at nature. Mine is a beautiful profession." The works he produced are beautiful too. They have a quiet intensity, an unflamboyant resolution, and a mastery of tonality and composition which is deeply satisfying.
