Ruth and Naomi

Black chalk with white bodycolor
Inscribed [1840-41]
11-11/16 x 15-5/8 inches

As recounted in the Old Testament, Naomi and her family fled Bethlehem to Moab to escape famine. In this drawing she tries to prevent her daughters Ruth and Oprah from returning with her. The group seems to have been inspired by classical sculpture, perhaps the famous Niobe and her Daughters, now in the Uffizi, Florence.
