Study
for Two Male Figures in "Comus--The Measure"
Pencil
[before 1864]
8-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches
| Exhibited
at the Royal Academy in 1864, Richmond's painting derives its title
from the poem by Milton-a masque first presented at Ludlow Castle in
1634. The story is of a young lady separated from, and later rescued
by, her brothers in a dark wood, where Comus and his band of
revelers discovered her. The section of the poem headed "The
Measure" means "The Dance." Richmond unites elements
of paintings by Titian in his composition. |
