Cynthia
Pell was considered one of the most promising artists of her generation,
but her mental state grew increasingly unstable, leading ultimately to
hospitalization and suicide. Despite her alienation, Pell addressed the
human condition with compassion, power, and physicality. Her work's emotional
intensity transcends and universalizes her own agonized struggle. It is
work not easily forgotten.
