| The temples of Philae,
dating mainly from the late Ptolemaic and early Roman Periods, were originally
located on the beautiful island at the First Cataract. When Bridgman visited
the temple of Isis in 1874, much of the colored decoration of the hypostyle
hall, with its columns and composite floral capitals as shown here, was
still intact. The completion of the old Aswan Dam in 1902 brought annual
flooding, which washed away all the color. The temples of Philae have now
been dismantled and re-erected on the nearby island of Agilkia. |
