The Temple of Dabod

Watercolor
4-7/8 x 7-1/2 inches
Inscribed: Figures should be half the size, Nubia Dabod 23 Feb 74

The Meroitic temple was dedicated to Amun, the supreme god of the Egyptian pantheon. During the Ptolemaic period (305-30 BCE), it was enlarged and re-dedicated to Isis. There were originally three pylons at the entrance of the temple, but by Bridgman’s time, only two remained. In 1960-61 the temple was dismantled and later presented to Spain. It was re-erected in the park of the Montana del Principe Pio in Madrid.
