The hypostyle Hall in the Great Temple of Amun

Pencil
8-3/4 x 5 inches
Inscribed: Karnak 21 March/1874

This vast hall, dating from the reigns of Seti I (1294-1279 BC) and Rameses II (1279-1213 BC), is the most imposing part of the whole Karnak complex. Covering an area of over 5,000 square meters, it contains 134 gigantic columns, the central row 21 meters high. A picturesque ruin in Bridgman’s time, it has since been cleared and the leaning column re-erected.
