Houses
in the shade of large trees, Esna-from the boat
Pencil,
watercolor, and gouache
5-1/8 x 7-7/8 inches
Inscribed: Esneh from dahabieh Jan 20 1874 (Egypt)
| The ‘Dahabieh’ in the
inscription above refers to the boat in which Bridgman traveled. Esna at
the time was described as “a large place…the capital of the province.” It
was here that vessels restocked and baked bread for the next stage of the
Nile journey. |
