Jeffrey Lewis

The paintings opposite are in our 25th-Anniversary Exhibition, Four Painters, September 12-October 11, 2008

Jeffrey Lewis’ work has been shaped by the experiences and memories of his youth growing up in Upstate New York. His landscapes, really mainly “skyscapes,” share something in common with the nineteenth-century American Luminist painters and the artists of the Hudson River School. With the latter he shares not only their subtle sensitivity to the effects of light, but also in their implicit acknowledgment of the landscape as a reflection of divine presence. With the Luminists Lewis shares sense of time and space that expresses itself through the prism of memory rather than direct observation and description.

Lewis is the recipient of the 2008 Alden Bryan Memorial Award for painting given by the National Academy of Fine Arts Museum at their 183rd annual invitational exhibition of contemporary American Art in New York City. His work is in public and private collections in the USA and abroad.
