Samuel Howitt

A country gentleman from Chigwell in Essex, Howitt became a professional artist only because of his family's financial difficulties. He first exhibited in 1783. His subjects are always drawn from country and sporting life. His style is very clearly influenced by that of Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), who became Howitt's brother-in-law.
