Gainsborough was one of the most remarkable men of an age rich in talent. A painter of acknowledged genius, he was a gifted amateur musician, intimate with all the leading composers and instrumentalists of the day, a letter-writer whose spontaneous and idiosyncratic style was compared to that of Sterne, and equally skittish and brilliant conversationalist--and, though essentially modest and unpretentious, clearly something of a character, an original in everything he said or did.
